Join us Monday, January 13th, for an engaging discussion with school-finance expert Paul Colbert who will discuss school voucher legislation.
School vouchers are payments made to parents who want to send their children to private schools or to home-school them. In prior legislative sessions, Republicans who represented rural areas joined forces with Democrats to oppose such legislation, but many of those Republicans lost their primaries. Colbert said, “It is a done deal that both chambers will pass a voucher bill. Whether they can agree on one is an open question.”
As a researcher, legislator, consultant or lobbyist, Colbert has influenced much of the Texas school finance legislation from 1974 to now. He represented the Meyerland/Westbury area in the Texas House from 1980 to 1992. He was responsible for budget and oversight for the Public Education Committee, a member of the Appropriations Committee, and Vice Chair of the House Committee on Higher Education. Before his election, Colbert was the research director for the Texas Senate Education Committee and an advisor to the governor on school finance. He was named a”Ten Best” legislator by Texas Monthly as well as many other awards.
Since leaving the House, Colbert has been a consultant to education organizations such as HISD, HCCS, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and UT Health Science Center. The Equity Center, a coalition of over 600 Texas school districts, gave Colbert it’s Champion of Equity Award for his consulting work since leaving office.
